Cyber Security Engineer Jobs Vacancy 2024: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to join the Governance, Risk, and Compliance Engineering Team. The Engineer will independently and collaboratively perform various activities supporting the Cyber Security Program. This position is within the Information Technology Solutions Division (ITSD) of the Computing Directorate, aligned with the Cyber Security Program (CSP) and supporting the Livermore Information Technology (LivIT) Program.

The Engineer will have a hybrid schedule, combining in-person and virtual work. The flexibility to work from home one or more days a week is offered. The hiring team will assess the Engineer’s knowledge and related experience to determine the appropriate level for the position. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned based on the Engineer’s level.

Qualifications Required for Cyber Security Engineer Jobs

  • U.S. citizenship and a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance are required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is needed.
  • Proficiency in Python or other programming languages is essential.
  • Experience in operating systems, virtual environments, and related hardware in a moderately complex server environment is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to interact with all levels of management and staff, are necessary.
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, technical team environment with competing priorities and meet tight deadlines is crucial.
  • A passion for approaching challenging problems with enthusiasm and creativity, along with the flexibility to change focus when needed, is highly valued.
  • The ability to work off-hours and on-call to respond to incidents (intermittently, either as-needed or as part of a rotation) is essential.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • The ability to work effectively with minimal guidance is highly valued.
  • Broad experience applying effective analytical and problem-solving skills to moderately complex problems, with a strong focus on governance, risk management, and compliance frameworks to ensure organizational integrity and regulatory adherence, is required.
  • The ability to plan, design, and evaluate complex cybersecurity solutions with a focus on information assurance to ensure the protection of sensitive data and the integrity of information systems is essential.

  • A master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent level of knowledge, is preferred.
  • Significant incident response or vulnerability management experience, including experience with cloud services such as AWS/Azure, is highly valued.
  • Proficiency in programming or scripting languages such as C, C#, Python, Java, PowerShell, and PHP is essential.

Cyber Security Engineer Salary at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The salary range for this Cyber Security Engineer role at the SES.1 level is $110,700 to $142,128 annually. For the SES.2 level, the salary range is $132,810 to $170,556 annually. LLNL believe this is the lowest to highest salary LLNL would pay for this role at the time of this posting. The salary will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. The salary range is based on several factors, including specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

 Job Responsibilities for Cyber Security Engineer

You will

  • Our mission is to safeguard our enterprise systems and valuable information by swiftly responding to security threats and incidents. LLNL work individually and as a team to achieve this goal.
  • LLNL actively seek out cyber threats and take immediate action to identify, contain, and eliminate them. We also support our colleagues in their recovery efforts.
  • LLNL analyze the data from LLNL intrusion detection systems to enhance our security measures. Additionally, we provide security monitoring and incident response support, including troubleshooting and resolving issues.
  • LLNL collaborate closely with our team members to ensure that we promptly patch and address any identified vulnerabilities.
  • LLNL also provide computer science and software development support using industry-standard software development practices. We leverage modern programming languages like Python within Linux, UNIX, and/or Windows environments.
  • LLNL develop scripts and automation tools to solve common problems and reduce operational costs.
  • LLNL promote and support plans to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • In addition to these responsibilities, LLNL may be assigned other duties as needed.
  • At the SES.2 level, LLNL will manage moderately complex to complex technical tasks and priorities of our customers and stakeholders. We will ensure that deadlines are met while leveraging the skills of our team members.
  • LLNL will develop methods, tools, and procedures to improve our incident response capabilities or vulnerability management processes. We will also automate various complex tasks.
  • LLNL will provide technical guidance to our team members on cybersecurity best practices and procedures.
